MARIETTA – The City of Marietta has been informed by one of our software vendors, Central Square Technologies, that their utility payment system, Click2Gov, experienced a recent event in which the credit card data of some of our customers could have been compromised.

Officials with Central Square Technology have informed the City that they do not have any evidence showing that any Marietta customer transaction was, in fact, compromised. They state they have provided the information and assistance to the City to date in an abundance of caution.

Customers who made payments on the City website via Click2Gov between August 26 – October 26, 2019 with a credit card could have had that credit card information compromised. A customer’s credit card information would only be at risk if a customer manually entered their credit card information on the Click2Gov application during the dates. Customers enrolled in the auto pay system prior to or after those dates and those who have paid in person, by mail, and over the phone during those dates were not affected. Additionally, tax payments are not affected.

Over thirty cities in the United States who utilize Click2Gov may have been affected by this security breach. We have confirmed with Central Square Technologies that they have corrected the issue and that no customer credit card data has been at risk since they made the correction. Out of an abundance of caution Central Square Technologies has agreed to offer free credit monitoring for all potentially impacted customers through Epiq. Letters are being mailed this week to customers who may have been affected by the central Square Technologies security breach with this information. If you believe you may have been affected or have questions, please call 770.794.1803 to speak directly with a city employee who will be able to assist you.

It is important to note that this Click2Gov application is not part of our internal City network therefore no internal City systems were compromised or impacted. The City of Marietta takes the protection of our data systems very seriously and constantly updates all our systems so that risks to our customer data can be minimized. The Click2Gov system had security updates applied to it several times throughout the year. In addition, the City also performs internal and external testing to ensure that the systems are not prone to any known vulnerabilities.
