This board consists of five members, all of whom are appointed by the City Council: two nominated via election by Police and Fire (Posts 2 and 4); two appointed by Council  (Posts 1 and 3); and one nominated by the other four board members (Post 5). Selection of Post 5 member must be in writing and signed by the members. If no majority vote is made within 30 days, all four members shall be removed from the board. 

 

Term


  • Posts 1-4: Three years (Term begins January 1 and ends December 31)
  • Post 5: 1 year (Term begins February 1 and ends January 31)

As set forth in Charter section 4.15.


Qualifications


The eligibility requirements to be a member of the Marietta Civil Service Board are:

  • Cannot hold any elected governmental position, or be employed by a municipal or county government
  • Cannot be less than 25 years of age
  • Must be a bona fide resident and qualified voter of Marietta
  • Cannot have an immediate family member serving in an elected position with Marietta or have an immediate family member who is currently employed by a city department or a department properly designated as under Civil Service Board jurisdiction, as set forth in Section 4.14 of the charter of the city of Marietta.

  • $125 per month

Purpose

The Civil Service Board oversees public hearings for any non-probationary member of the fire department below the rank of deputy chief or of the police department below the rank of deputy chief that has been removed, discharged, demoted, adversely affected by the promotional process or involuntarily retired except for cause upon written charges or complaint.
