MARIETTA –The City of Marietta is saddened to announce that former Marietta Councilwoman Betty Hunter passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
Councilwoman Hunter served on the Marietta City Council for 24 years, from January 1982 until 2006. She was appointed to the Marietta Pension Board in January 1986 and served on the board for 20 years.
“Betty was an extraordinary public servant because of her service to the Marietta Community through her many years on City Council,” said Mayor Steve Tumlin. “She will always be remembered for her dedication to our citizens and the many causes she championed throughout her public servant career. Our City was lucky to have such an amazing woman to serve on our Council.”
The City of Marietta would like to thank Councilwoman Hunter and her family for her public service to our City. We always will remember her kindness and generosity and will always see her footprint in our City in the projects, developments, and opportunities she helped see through to completion in Marietta.
“Councilwoman Hunter was a remarkable person whom I had the pleasure of working with for many years”, said City Manager Bill Bruton Jr. “She was devoted to the people of her ward, our employees, and the Marietta community. Betty brought people of different backgrounds together through the formation of the Loop Group and her annual neighborhood cookouts, and made sure children had Christmas gifts through her Christmas Gift Parades. She cared about the history of Marietta and was an advocate for community improvement and redevelopment. She accomplished a lot in her life, but never wanted the spotlight. Councilwoman Betty Hunter will be truly missed. “
There will be a visitation on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm, and again from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Mayes Ward Funeral Home located at 180 Church Street.
