The Marietta Fire Department would like to remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when changing their clocks this weekend.
Smoke alarms are the only device in the home that will let you know there is a fire. A properly working smoke alarm could provide enough early warning to allow for a successful escape. It's a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms twice a year when you change your clocks. Alarms that are powered by electricity should also have their backup batteries changed twice a year.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years, to clean your smoke alarm regularly (according to the manufacturer's instructions) and to have several smoke detectors in a home. This includes an alarm on every level and outside every bedroom, and inside bedrooms if people sleep with the door closed. It's also a good idea to install smoke alarms away from cooking vapors to avoid false alarms, according to the NFPA.
