MARIETTA - The City of Marietta would like to inform its citizens of recent changes in Georgia legislation to impose higher fines for illegally passing a stopped school bus. Under the new law, violations captured through photo-enforcement programs will result in fines of up to $1,000. Additionally, violations issued directly by law enforcement officers will result in a minimum fine of $1,000. Please be aware that these changes will take effect on July 1, 2024.

Key legislative changes:

Enforcement through camera safety programs - Violations captured by recorded images and video will now carry a fine of up to $1,000.  No points are assessed for these violations against the offender’s driver’s license.

Enforcement through issuance of a traffic citation - Citations issued by law enforcement officers will now carry a minimum fine of $1,000, possible confinement of up to 12 months in jail, or both.  Points will assess against the offender’s driver’s license.

Escalated enforcement for repeat offenders - While a first offense will not result in points assessment or impact insurance premiums, repeat offenders face escalating consequences. Upon the second or subsequent violations within the same jurisdiction, the law enforcement agency is mandated to request insurance coverage information from the Department of Revenue and notify the vehicle owner’s insurance carrier of the violations.
